Impressive architecture
One of my favorite things about Bilbao is that it has a harmonious mix of old and modern; for example, La Universidad de Duesto is old, but its directly across the river from the Guggenheim Museum, one of the greatest displays of architecture in the world. There are two things here that especially caught my attention. The Guggenheim Museum and the Puente Colgante (Hanging Bridge). The first weekend that we were in Bilbao, we visited the Guggenheim. It was designed by Frank Gehry, and one thing I found very interesting is that from an arial view, its shaped like a fish. Also, when you look at the panels of the titanium, the light catches it just right and they look like fish scales. This is really neat because traditionally, this area was made up of fisherman, so its the perfect mixture of modern and old. In the United States, it seems like we are always trying to make things better and better and we just through the past out the window, but here, they work hard to preserve the past and they are satisfied with it. Not only is Bilbao a modern place to live, but its a historical site also. I live in Las Arenas, but my host mom is from Portugalete, so we visit there often. Portugalete is right across the river from Areeta, but there's only one way to get there, the Puente Colgante (hanging bridge). You can drive your car onto the slab of cement and park it there, and the bridge will take you and your car across the river. The bridge can take about six cars across at a time and it only costs about thirty cents. When I look back and think about Bilbao, I will always remember these two things.
