Talk about feeling like a tourist...

"The food is so great in basque country!!"-quote from everyone and anyone that I told I would be going to stay in Bilbao for a month. Little did I realize that one night when we were most craving a delicious authentic Spanish meal would end with a semi-authentic Chinese/Japanese/Vietnamese meal at Old Shanghai. After hearing from Carla that Eluno was a fabulous restaurant we set out after an afternoon of shopping to find it. I had forgotten the piece of paper with the name on it so after tracking down someone at Colegio Mayor to break into my room to find it we found the restaurant. Needless to say at 8 we were extremely hungry, only to find out after basically breaking down the doors at the restaurant that it was closed on Thursdays...party fowl. Then we searched for a half hour for another restaurant with no luck, Old Shanghai it was. The food was fabulous, but at that point I would have also eaten just about anything (even cow balls). However, I have had luck with the bars in Bilbao as we have found quite a few with extremely nice bartenders who love getting to know us. (See pictures below). At the bars it is funny to try and talk to the locals who want to get to know you, we all know my Spanish speaking skills aren't quite up to par yet, however they will most likely get better after "habla pequeno conversacion". The differences that I notice are definitely portion size at the restaurants (tapas and even lunch) as well as the times that they are open. Also you are not rushed out of a restaurant but instead you often have to insist on having the check as they promote relaxing and truly enjoying a meal. I really like that eating is one of the most social things a person can do in Spain.
